The plastic lawn flamingo.... sort of a mysterious iconographic artifact. Who still buys them? Why do they not appear in TV and film much anymore, even though if you go on a walk through nearly any suburb today, you will see at least one within 10 minutes? I don't know. But I enjoy the idea of sticking an artificial exotic animal on your lawn for no reason. Artificial things carry weight that we don't always understand as easily as we understand the real. I can look at an oak tree arcing above my driveway and understand it. It is only alive for the sake of living. If it dies, my path is blocked. Its history is never deviated from its present; it comes only from a lineage of other trees who were only living to live, and only dying to block paths. The bright pink lawn flamingo slowly leeching microplastics into my neighbors yard? It almost has more complex of a history than I as a living being do. Someone had reason to invent it, teams of people had reason to market it, and its replication and continuance into today required droves of people to want one for themselves, all for myriad reasons.

And yet, it's still just some molecules formed into a shape. It signifies something. It is information, just like we are. As humans we recite sparkly quotes like "we are made of stardust" all the time, but so is a dinky lawn flamingo. Either nothing is special, or everything is special. You decide.

The plastic lawn flamingo is the secret 'true" emblem of Studio Long Legs, and we have one at each of our compounds (the Barnpartment, the Motel, the Greenhouse, and the Commune). It's a reminder of Summer, the season we were borne of.
